Peepshow erschien im September 1988 und markiert eines der vielschichtigsten Kapitel in der Diskografie von Siouxsie and the Banshees. Ver\u00f6ffentlicht wurde das Album \u00fcber das britische Label Polydor Records, mit der US-Ver\u00f6ffentlichung \u00fcber Geffen Records. In der Geschichte der Band steht dieses Werk an einer besonderen Schwelle: Es verbindet die dunkle \u00c4sthetik der fr\u00fchen Post-Punk-Phase mit einer deutlich erweiterten, beinahe orchestralen Klangpalette. Zugleich ist es das erste Studioalbum der Gruppe, das mit einer erweiterten Besetzung entstand und damit einen neuen Abschnitt im kreativen Selbstverst\u00e4ndnis der Band einleitete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die eigentlichen kreativen Kernfiguren des Albums bleiben selbstverst\u00e4ndlich die beiden pr\u00e4genden Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten der Band: S\u00e4ngerin Siouxsie Sioux und Bassist Steven Severin. Seit den sp\u00e4ten siebziger Jahren bilden sie das konzeptionelle Zentrum von Siouxsie and the Banshees \u2013 Siouxsie mit ihrer charakteristischen Stimme, die zwischen Distanz, Ironie und emotionaler Intensit\u00e4t wechseln kann, und Severin mit seinem melodischen Bassspiel sowie seinem Sinn f\u00fcr atmosph\u00e4rische Dramaturgie.<\/p>\n\n\n

F\u00fcr Peepshow wurde diese kreative Achse jedoch entscheidend erweitert. Der Gitarrist Jon Klein brachte eine neue stilistische Flexibilit\u00e4t ein. Sein Spiel verbindet klare melodische Linien mit subtilen Texturen und \u00f6ffnet den Sound st\u00e4rker in Richtung Art-Pop und atmosph\u00e4rischen Alternative Rock. Ebenso wichtig war der Beitrag von Martin McCarrick, dessen Rolle weit \u00fcber die eines klassischen Bandmitglieds hinausging. McCarrick spielte Cello, Keyboards, Akkordeon und weitere Instrumente und verlieh vielen Songs ihre besondere klangliche Tiefe. Durch ihn entstanden jene kammermusikalischen Schattierungen, die das Album von vielen fr\u00fcheren Ver\u00f6ffentlichungen der Band unterscheiden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das Schlagzeug \u00fcbernahm Budgie, der bereits seit Anfang der achtziger Jahre zum festen Kern der Gruppe geh\u00f6rte. Sein Spiel ist auf Peepshow besonders facettenreich: mal minimalistisch und pr\u00e4zise, mal rhythmisch komplex und beinahe tribal. Gemeinsam formten diese f\u00fcnf Musiker ein Ensemble, das deutlich \u00fcber die klassische Struktur einer Post-Punk-Band hinausging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Produktion \u00fcbernahm der britische Produzent Mike Hedges, der f\u00fcr seine F\u00e4higkeit bekannt ist, atmosph\u00e4rische Klangr\u00e4ume zu schaffen. Seine Arbeit tr\u00e4gt wesentlich dazu bei, dass Peepshow<\/em> einen besonders r\u00e4umlichen, detailreichen Sound besitzt. Instrumente erscheinen nicht nur als rhythmische oder melodische Elemente, sondern oft als Teil eines gr\u00f6\u00dferen Klangbildes, das sich langsam entfaltet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schon der Titel des Albums deutet die zentrale Idee an. Eine Peepshow ist traditionell ein kleiner Guckkasten oder eine B\u00fchne, durch deren Fenster man kurze Szenen beobachten kann. Dieses Bild passt erstaunlich gut zur Struktur des Albums. Die Songs wirken wie einzelne Episoden eines dunklen Theaters \u2013 mal grotesk, mal melancholisch, mal von ironischem Humor durchzogen. Die Musik bewegt sich dabei zwischen experimenteller Klanggestaltung und zug\u00e4nglichen Popstrukturen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Der Auftakt \u201ePeek-a-Boo\u201c ist ein Beispiel f\u00fcr diese neue kreative Freiheit. Das St\u00fcck beginnt mit ungew\u00f6hnlichen rhythmischen Fragmenten und entwickelt daraus eine \u00fcberraschend eing\u00e4ngige Struktur. Bl\u00e4ser, Samples und versetzte Percussion schaffen ein leicht surreal wirkendes Klangbild, das zugleich verspielt und geheimnisvoll wirkt. Die Stimme von Siouxsie bewegt sich dabei elegant durch das Arrangement und verbindet die einzelnen Elemente zu einer geschlossenen Szene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eLove in a Void\u201c<\/em> er\u00f6ffnet mit unmittelbarer Dringlichkeit. Die Gitarrenarbeit ist scharf konturiert, beinahe aggressiv, w\u00e4hrend der Bass eine dunkle Gegenbewegung erzeugt. Siouxsies Stimme bleibt kontrolliert \u2013 nicht eruptiv, sondern bewusst distanziert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eThe Killing Jar\u201c entwickelt anschlie\u00dfend eine deutlich dunklere Atmosph\u00e4re. Der Song greift das Bild eines Glasbeh\u00e4lters auf, in dem Insekten konserviert werden \u2013 ein Symbol f\u00fcr Besitz, Kontrolle und die zerst\u00f6rerische Seite von Faszination. Musikalisch baut sich das St\u00fcck langsam auf und gewinnt mit jeder Passage an Intensit\u00e4t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mit \u201eScarecrow\u201c \u00f6ffnet sich eine beinahe hypnotische Klanglandschaft. Gitarren und Cello verweben sich zu einer langsam kreisenden Struktur, w\u00e4hrend die Rhythmik eine unterschwellige Spannung erzeugt. Der Song wirkt wie eine n\u00e4chtliche Szene in einer verlassenen Landschaft \u2013 ruhig, aber voller latenter Unruhe.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201eCarousel\u201c bringt anschlie\u00dfend eine leicht verspielte Bewegung ins Album. Die Melodie wirkt fast t\u00e4nzerisch, doch unter dieser Oberfl\u00e4che liegt eine subtile Melancholie. Wie ein Karussell dreht sich der Song zwischen Leichtigkeit und Dunkelheit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In \u201eBurn-Up\u201c verdichtet sich die Energie. Die Instrumente treten st\u00e4rker hervor, das Tempo wirkt entschlossener, und Siouxsies Gesang gewinnt eine fast dramatische Intensit\u00e4t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eOrnaments of Gold\u201c geh\u00f6rt zu den atmosph\u00e4risch dichtesten Momenten des Albums. Hier treten die orchestralen Elemente besonders hervor. Das Arrangement wirkt geheimnisvoll und fast filmisch, als w\u00fcrde sich eine Szene langsam aus dem Dunkel heraus entwickeln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mit \u201eRawhead and Bloodybones\u201c greift die Band Motive aus der britischen Folklore auf. Der Titel verweist auf eine alte Schreckfigur aus Kindergeschichten, und die Musik vermittelt tats\u00e4chlich das Gef\u00fchl eines d\u00fcsteren M\u00e4rchens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
